The union focuses on our main planning and overtime themes. After 24 days of negotiations with BTS, the trading time is reached, but there is no agreement. While some progress has been made, the union is far from the employer. Negotiations are ongoing, but mobilization efforts are needed. The strength of a unified membership will make a difference. Not only is this the first negotiation with Bell Technical Solutions since Unifor`s inception in 2013, but the union has also participated in a historic and united bargaining process that brings together Indigenous people in Ontario and Quebec around a joint bargaining table. Nothing like this type of coordination of negotiations has ever existed before for technical workers in Canada. Following 24-hour negotiations with Bell Technical Solutions, the Quebec and Ontario bargaining committees are pleased to report that a preliminary agreement has been reached. The committees unanimously recommended this preliminary agreement with the employer. On Wednesday, December 6, 2017, Unifor`s Joint Bargaining Committee began formal negotiations with Bell Technical Solutions (BTS) to negotiate a new contract for approximately 5,000 employees in Ontario and 2700 in Quebec. To represent the needs of the members during these negotiations, the two negotiating committees cooperate: the Aboriginals, represented at the negotiating table, are: Locals 28, 30-O, 31,34-O, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39-O, 40-O, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 1996-W in Ontario and Locals 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 93, 98 and 176 in Quebec.
Faced with the many common problems in Ontario and Quebec, we have agreed on a number of negotiation rules to demonstrate our solidarity and strengthen our position during negotiations with the company. Among the priority themes of this round of negotiations are: equal pay for equal work for all workers in both regions, work-life balance, the end of forced overtime, the improvement of part-time jobs and paid leave for domestic violence. The key message that is being sent to the employer is that fairness for BTS technicians is long overdue! Details of the ratification schedule will be announced soon.
